First Home Owner's Grant First Home Owner's Grant (FHOG) If you are buying or building your first home you may qualify for a $7,000 First Home Owner Grant AND you may also qualify for an additional $3,000 Commonwealth Government grant.
The Commonwealth Government's First Home Owner Grant was implemented to offset the higher cost of buying a home under the GST. The Commonwealth Government Additional Grant was designed to help with the high costs of Stamp Duty imposed on a property purchase.
Rules may vary slightly between states but payments will be the same regardless of where you buy and for how much. Payments are not means-tested, so your level of income does not make you ineligible.
To qualify you need to be:
- a couple or individual buying or building your first home
- an Australian citizen or permanent resident
- entering into a binding contract to buy or build a new home after 1 July 2000 (owner-builders who started building a home after 1 July 2000 also qualify).
Houses, townhouses, apartments, and units all qualify for the grant. If you have previously purchased land but not yet built a home on it, you would still be eligible to apply.
